Photogram is an Innovate UK backed computational photography startup based at the UCL university incubator. It is building the Alice Camera, a novel AI camera, in Britain from the ground up for the 40 million income-generating influencers, YouTubers, TikTokers, and Twitch streamers who create frequent digital content as part of the passion economy and the future of work.
By combining professional quality optics with AI-accelerated hardware and computational photography algorithms driven by deep learning it is offering content creators a device more suited to a world of image sharing and content creation.
Both founders had become increasingly frustrated with the lack of innovation and usability of traditional digital cameras when creating and streaming content. They had surveyed over 1,000 creators to validate their assumptions and concluded that there was significant opportunity to build a camera more suited to the needs of the modern creator.
By taking advantage of a new opportunity to bring together mirrorless camera technology and smartphone technology, Photogram is offering an entirely novel and affordable product for creators. It will be the only interchangeable lens camera that is designed from the ground up for content creators and will take photography into a new era of image sharing and live streaming. The content creators engage with their audiences at scale by sharing high-quality videos on new platforms like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Twitch and monetise their unique skills. The Alice Camera’s mission is to empower this new generation of content creators who have been let down by traditional digital cameras.
Photogram won a £175,000 grant from Innovate UK to develop the Alice Camera. The grant funding has already allowed the team to expand to six people, will help the company protect their intellectual property, and has accelerated their route to market so that it can deliver a product that solves the problems of the modern content creator. Two months after making its public launch, people are taking notice. 150 people have put down money and placed a deposit for the Alice Camera, 50 people have joined the beta program, and 1500 people have signed up to the newsletter. The Alice Camera has also been covered by 10 major photography journals and its YouTube channel has received over 40,000 views.
